The Monastery of the Hieronymites (Jeronimos) was built by King Manuel I of Portugal in 1501 Standing at the entrance to Lisbon harbour. It is built in the Manueline architectural style, particular to Portugal, with elements of the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods. Nearby lies a fortress known as the Belem tower, built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition. It has two parts, the tower itself with four vaulted rooms and the bulwark containing a casemate with artillery. |
