Budapest, the capital and largest city of Hungary, situates on both banks of the Danube. It has the remains of monuments such as the Roman city of Aquincum and the Gothic castle of Buda, which have had a considerable influence on the architecture of various periods. The city was divided into two parts, which are the Hilly Buda on the western bank of the Danube River and the flat Pest on the eastern bank. In 1849 the first bridge called the Chain Bridge was built to join the two cities together. In 1872 Buda and Pest formed Budapest as the new capital city of Hungary. |
